How the calculator works

For each ingredient we convert the amount to grams and multiply it by the composition per 100 g. Food composition comes from the USDA FoodData Central database of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, for Slovak products such as bryndza, quark or smoked meats from a typical label. Cups are US cups (236.6 ml), tablespoons 14.8 ml and teaspoons 4.9 ml; the metric cup of our recipes (250 ml) is listed separately. Pieces, spoons and cups are converted with typical weights of the ingredient (an egg about 50 g, a tablespoon of flour about 10 g), milliliters by density. The total is divided by the number of servings. How much a cup, a spoon or a package of each ingredient weighs is in the cooking measurement converter.

We calculate the nutrition facts of the recipes on this website the same way – you find them with every recipe under Nutrition facts. Light dishes with calories per serving are among the light recipes.

Why the values are approximate

  • We calculate from the raw ingredients. Cooking changes the weight (water evaporates, pasta and rice absorb it), the calories stay. The value per 100 g is therefore based on the ingredients, not on the finished dish.
  • Frying oil is not included – food absorbs only part of it. For fried dishes the real value is higher.
  • The composition of a particular product may differ (fat content of meat, cheese or cream). Values from the label are more accurate.
  • Salt is calculated from the sodium in the ingredients (sodium × 2.5); “salt to taste” counts as a typical amount.
