How we choose light recipes and calculate calories

We calculate calories, protein, fat and carbohydrates for every recipe from its ingredients and their amounts using the USDA FoodData Central food composition tables (for Slovak products such as bryndza or quark, from a typical label) and divide them by the number of servings. Pieces and spoonfuls are converted to grams using typical weights, ingredients “to taste” are counted in a usual amount. If an ingredient cannot be converted, the recipe gets no values. All values are shown with each recipe under Nutrition facts.

  • A light recipe has at most, per serving: soup 250 kcal and 12 g fat, main dish 500 kcal and 22 g fat, salad 350 kcal and 20 g fat, breakfast 350 kcal and 15 g fat. If the number of servings is our estimate, the recipe must meet the limit even with one serving fewer. Deep-fried dishes and desserts are not included.
  • The values are approximate: they depend on the specific ingredients, the size of the serving and the preparation. For most recipes the number of servings is an editorial estimate. Add any side dish that is not part of the recipe.
  • The recipes are not a diet or a treatment. What counts is how much energy you take in and use over the whole day. If you have health problems or follow a diet prescribed by a doctor, follow the advice of your doctor or a dietitian.
