Yellow split pea dal is made by simmering split peas with turmeric until creamy, then stirring in onion, garlic, ginger, and tomatoes sautéed with cumin. Yellow split peas work just as well as lentils in this thick Indian dish, which is served with rice or flatbreads.

Instructions

Tip: tap a step to mark it as done.

  1. Soak the peas

    2 hr

Rinse the peas and soak them in cold water for 2 hours.

  2. Cook the peas

    45 min

Drain the peas, add 1.2 l of water and the turmeric, and cook for 40–45 minutes, until the peas break down and become creamy. Skim off the foam with a spoon and add water as needed.

  3. Sauté the aromatics

    10 min

Sauté the cumin and finely chopped onion in the oil until the onion is golden. Add the garlic and ginger, followed by the diced tomatoes. Simmer for 5 minutes.

  4. Combine

    5 min

Stir the mixture into the peas, season with salt, and simmer for 5 minutes. Serve with rice, topped with cilantro leaves.

Tip: Skim off the foam that forms as the peas cook with a spoon to help keep them from boiling over.
