Nebeské rezy, Slovak layered cake slices also known as cream slices, combine a delicate sponge cake, thick Zlatý klas pudding with sour cream, coffee-dipped ladyfingers, and whipped cream. Grated chocolate finishes the top. Zlatý klas is a Slovak pudding mix.

You can vary the pudding, for example by using two packets of Zlatý klas and one packet of caramel pudding mix.

Instructions

Tip: tap a step to mark it as done.

  1. Bake the sponge cake

Beat the egg yolks with the powdered sugar. Add the water and the flour mixed with the baking powder, then gently fold in the egg whites beaten to stiff peaks. Pour the batter into a baking pan greased and dusted with coarse wheat flour. Bake at 180 °C (350 °F) for about 15–20 minutes. Let cool.

  2. Make the pudding cream

Cook the milk, Zlatý klas pudding mix, and granulated sugar into a thick pudding, then let cool. Stir the sour cream into the cooled pudding.

  3. Assemble the layers

Spread the pudding cream over the sponge cake. Briefly dip the ladyfingers in the strong coffee and arrange them on top.

  4. Finish the cake

Whip the cream and spread it over the ladyfingers. Grate the chocolate over the top. Refrigerate the cake until set.

Tip: If serving the cake to children, dip the ladyfingers in lukewarm milk with cocoa instead of coffee. The cake slices best after a night in the refrigerator, once the layers have set together.
