Hot apple cider with cinnamon and cloves is a nonalcoholic winter drink sold alongside mulled wine at Christmas markets. Make it at home with store-bought or homemade pressed apple juice, briefly steeped with spices and slices of fruit.

The juice is naturally sweet, so add honey only to taste.

Instructions

Tip: tap a step to mark it as done.

  1. Prepare the fruit

Wash the apple and orange and cut them into thin slices. Leave the apple unpeeled and just remove the core.

  2. Heat with the spices

Pour the pressed apple juice into a pot and add the cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, allspice, and fruit slices. Heat over low heat until steaming, but do not let it boil.

  3. Steep

Cover the pot and let the cider steep over the lowest heat for 10 minutes so the spices release their aroma.

  4. Serve

Stir in honey to taste. Pour the cider through a strainer into mugs and add a slice of apple or orange to each.

Tip: If making ahead, remove the spices after steeping and simply reheat the cider before serving. Cloves and star anise can overpower the drink if left in too long.
