Mulled red wine with cinnamon, cloves and orange is a hot drink as much a part of Advent and Christmas as Christmas markets. Briefly simmer the spices and fruit slices with water and sugar first, then gently heat the wine without letting it boil so it retains its flavor.

Use dry or semi-dry red wine and adjust the sweetness with sugar.

Instructions

Tip: tap a step to mark it as done.

  1. Prepare the fruit

Wash the orange and lemon in warm water and cut them into thin slices, leaving the peel on. Press the cloves into two orange slices to keep them from floating loose in the mugs.

  2. Simmer the spices

Put the water, sugar, cinnamon sticks, star anise and fruit slices in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally, then simmer over low heat for 5 minutes to release the spices' aroma.

  3. Heat the wine

Pour in the wine and warm over low heat until hot and the first small bubbles begin to form on the surface. Do not let the wine boil, as boiling would cause the alcohol to evaporate and the wine to lose flavor. Cover the saucepan and let the wine steep over the lowest heat for 10 minutes.

  4. Serve

Taste the wine and add more sugar if needed. Pour through a strainer into mugs or heatproof glasses and add an orange slice to each.

Tip: Do not leave citrus slices with their peel in the wine overnight, as the peel would make it bitter. Strain any leftover wine and refrigerate it, then reheat it just as gently the next day.
