Grog is a simple hot drink made with rum, water, sugar, and lemon. It originated in the British navy, where Admiral Edward Vernon ordered sailors to dilute their rum with water in 1740. The drink was named after his nickname, Old Grog. Add the rum to hot, not boiling, water to preserve its aroma. It is ready in 5 minutes. It contains alcohol and is not suitable for children or anyone who will be driving.

Instructions

Tip: tap a step to mark it as done.

  1. Heat the water

    3 min

Bring the water, sugar, and cloves to a boil to dissolve the sugar and release the cloves' aroma. Remove from the heat and let stand for 1 minute. Squeeze the juice from half the lemon and cut the other half into slices.

  2. Stir in the rum

    2 min

Stir the rum and lemon juice into the hot water. Pour into two mugs, leaving out the cloves, and add a lemon slice to each. Serve immediately.

Tip: Do not boil the rum, as it would lose its aroma. A tablespoon of honey can replace the cane sugar, but add it only after removing the water from the heat.
