This soft homemade bread with milk and dry yeast uses cup measurements, so there is no need to weigh the ingredients. The dough, made with all-purpose flour, warm water, milk, oil, and yeast, should be soft and slightly sticky. Let it rise in an oiled bowl for an hour, then in a loaf pan for another half hour. Bake for about 40 minutes at 180 °C (350 °F) for a loaf with a crisp crust and a tender crumb that stays soft for several days.

Instructions

Tip: tap a step to mark it as done.

  1. Stir the sugar and yeast into the warm milk. Pour in the warm water, stir, and add the oil. Add the flour and salt and knead into a soft, slightly sticky dough. Grease a bowl with oil and place the dough in it.

  2. Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour. Then pour a little oil into your palm and knead the dough briefly.

  3. Place the dough in a loaf pan and let rise for at least 30 minutes. Place the pan in an oven preheated to 180 °C (350 °F), set a small oven-safe bowl of water beside it, and bake for about 40 minutes.

  4. Turn the baked bread out of the pan, cover, and let cool.

Tip: To check whether the bread is done, turn it out of the pan and tap the bottom—it should sound hollow. If it sounds dull, return it to the oven without the pan for a few more minutes.
