This soft white bread with active dry yeast and butter has a tender crumb and a slightly sweet dough, making it a good match for ham or jam. Dissolve the yeast in warm water with sugar, then gradually mix in the sifted flour, butter, and salt until the dough is smooth and slightly sticky. Let it rise for about an hour, until doubled in size, and bake for 40 minutes at 180 °C (350 °F). Allow about an hour for preparation and baking, plus rising time.

Instructions
Tip: tap a step to mark it as done.
Dissolve the yeast in the water in a bowl, add the sugar, and stir. Let stand at room temperature for at least 10 minutes.
Add the butter and salt, then gradually sift in the flour. Do not add it all at once; knead as you go until the dough is smooth and slightly sticky. Knead for about 6 minutes.
Return the dough to the bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let rise for about an hour, or until doubled in size.
Gently knead the risen dough and place it in a greased loaf pan or baking dish.
Preheat the oven to 180 °C (350 °F) and bake the bread for about 40 minutes, until baked through. Check for doneness by inserting a wooden skewer into the loaf.
Tip: Remove the baked bread from the pan and let it cool on a wire rack so the bottom does not become soggy. If you prefer a soft crust, rub the bread with a piece of butter while it is still hot.
