In many Slovak families, wafers with honey, garlic and walnuts are served at the start of Christmas Eve dinner, before the soup. The thin Christmas wafers are bought ready-made; all you need to prepare at home are the honey, peeled garlic and chopped walnuts.
According to folk tradition, honey symbolizes a sweet and good year, while garlic was believed to ward off evil. The wafers are followed by kapustnica, a Slovak sauerkraut soup, or fish soup.

Instructions
Tip: tap a step to mark it as done.
Prepare the honey
Place the honey in a bowl. If it has crystallized, set the bowl in warm water and stir occasionally until the honey becomes runny. Do not heat it on the stove, as high heat causes it to lose its aroma.
Prepare the garlic and walnuts
Peel the garlic and cut the cloves in half lengthwise so everyone at the table has a piece. Coarsely chop the walnuts and place them in a second bowl.
Set the table
Place the wafers, honey, garlic and walnuts on the Christmas Eve dinner table. Have each person spread a thin layer of honey on a wafer and sprinkle it with walnuts. Eat the garlic with the wafer: either dip a piece of garlic in the honey or simply rub it over the wafer before adding the honey.
Traditions
In many families, the host or hostess traces a small cross in honey on each person's forehead before the meal. In households where garlic is not eaten, serve the wafers with just honey and walnuts.
Leftover wafers
Store any leftover wafers in a dry, sealed container, as moisture makes them soft.
Tip: Taste the walnuts before chopping, as older nuts can be rancid and bitter. Chop them with a knife on a cutting board; a food processor can easily turn them into meal rather than coarse pieces.
