Studený pes, known in German as Kalter Hund, is a no-bake cake made by layering butter cookies in a loaf pan with a chocolate mixture of coconut oil, cocoa powder, and chocolate. Once chilled until firm, it is cut into slices with alternating thin stripes of cookies and chocolate.

In Germany, it is also known as Kalte Schnauze and is a classic at children's parties. Unlike a chocolate dessert with cookies, it contains no powdered milk or dried fruit.

Instructions

Tip: tap a step to mark it as done.

  1. Prepare the pan

    5 min

Line a 25 cm loaf pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides.

  2. Make the chocolate mixture

    15 min

Melt the coconut oil in a saucepan over low heat, then remove from the heat. Break the chocolate into pieces and stir it in until melted. Sift the cocoa powder and powdered sugar into the saucepan, add the vanilla sugar, salt, and cream, and whisk until smooth. Let cool for 10 minutes to thicken slightly.

  3. Assemble the layers

    10 min

Pour 3 tbsp of the chocolate mixture into the bottom of the pan and arrange a layer of cookies close together on top, breaking them as needed to fit. Spread with the chocolate mixture and continue layering until all the cookies are used, making 6 to 7 layers. Pour the remaining chocolate mixture over the top.

  4. Chill until firm

    4 hr

Refrigerate the pan for at least 4 hours, until the chocolate mixture is completely firm.

  5. Slice

    5 min

Lift the cake out of the pan using the parchment paper. Using a sharp knife warmed in hot water, cut into slices about 1.5 cm thick.

Tip: Arrange the cookies close together so the slices have straight stripes. Store the cake in the refrigerator, as the coconut oil softens at room temperature.
