Opekance, Slovak poppy seed bread bites, are a Christmas Eve dish; this quick version uses bread rolls with no kneading or rising. Cut stale rolls into pieces, toast them in the oven until golden, pour hot milk with honey over them, and coat them in ground poppy seeds, sugar, and butter. Toasting the rolls keeps them from turning to mush. Unlike bobáľky, the yeast-dough version of these bread bites, these are ready in 30 minutes. They are also a good way to use up leftover bread rolls.

  1. Cut the rolls

    5 min

Preheat the oven to 180 °C (350 °F). Cut the rolls into pieces about 2 cm in size and spread them on a baking sheet in a single layer.

  2. Toast the bread

    12 min

Bake at 180 °C (350 °F) for 10–12 minutes, until golden and crisp. Toss halfway through baking.

  3. Heat the milk and honey

    5 min

Heat the milk with the honey and vanilla sugar until just below boiling, stirring until the honey dissolves. Melt the butter and mix the poppy seeds with the powdered sugar.

  4. Soak and coat

    8 min

Place the toasted bread pieces in a large bowl. Gradually pour the hot milk over them, tossing gently until absorbed. Add the melted butter and poppy seed mixture and toss to coat. Serve warm or lukewarm.

Tip: Add the milk gradually and let the bowl sit for a few minutes. The pieces should soften but hold their shape, so add more milk a spoonful at a time only as needed.
