Wine balls are no-bake Christmas cookies made with 250 g ground ladyfingers (sponge fingers), ground walnuts, cocoa powder and powdered sugar, bound together with 120 ml red wine warmed with a little butter. The mixture rests briefly in the refrigerator before being shaped into balls and rolled in granulated sugar.

This batch makes about 40 balls. Unlike rum balls, they use red wine instead of rum and less butter; unlike wine cookies, they are not baked. The wine is not boiled, so the balls contain alcohol and are not suitable for children.

Instructions

Tip: tap a step to mark it as done.

  1. Grind the ladyfingers

    5 min

Grind the ladyfingers finely in a food processor so there are no large pieces left to feel in the balls. In a bowl, mix them with the ground walnuts, powdered sugar, vanilla sugar and cocoa powder.

  2. Warm the wine and butter

    5 min

In a small saucepan, warm the red wine with the butter just until the butter melts. Do not boil the wine. Remove from the heat and stir in the jam.

  3. Make the mixture

    5 min

Pour the warm wine over the dry ingredients, stir with a wooden spoon, then work by hand into a smooth, moldable mixture. If it crumbles, add a tablespoon of wine; if it is sticky, add a little ground ladyfingers or walnuts.

  4. Let the mixture rest

    20 min

Cover the bowl and refrigerate the mixture for 20 minutes. During this time, the ladyfingers will absorb the wine, making the mixture easier to shape.

  5. Shape the balls

    25 min

Pour the granulated sugar into a shallow bowl. With damp hands, shape the mixture into balls about 2.5 cm in diameter. Immediately roll them in the sugar and place in paper candy cups.

  6. Chill until firm

    1 hr

Refrigerate the balls for 1 hour to firm up. Store in a sealed container in a cool place for about 2 weeks.

Tip: Use semisweet or sweet red wine; dry wine makes the balls more astringent, so add a tablespoon of sugar to the mixture. For children, use red grape juice instead of wine.
