Višňová žemľovka is a Slovak sour cherry bread pudding served as a sweet lunch: sliced bread rolls soaked in sweetened milk and eggs are layered with quark (farmer's cheese) and pitted sour cherries, then topped with meringue and baked until golden. Stale bread rolls work well here, too.

Bread rolls
10 minPreheat the oven to 180 °C (350 °F). Cut the bread rolls into rounds. Whisk the milk with the egg yolks and vanilla sugar, then soak the bread slices in the mixture.
Layers
10 minMix the quark with 2 tablespoons of sugar. Place half the soaked bread in a greased baking dish, spread the quark over it, add the sour cherries, and cover with the remaining bread. Pour the remaining milk mixture over the top.
Bake
25 minBake for 25 minutes, until the bread on top is golden.
Meringue
10 minBeat the egg whites with the sugar until stiff peaks form. Spread over the bread pudding and bake for another 8–10 minutes, until the meringue is golden.
Tip: If using frozen sour cherries, toss them with a tablespoon of semolina and add them while still frozen so their juices do not make the bread pudding soggy.
