Cinnamon French toast is made with bread slices dipped in beaten eggs with milk, cinnamon, and vanilla sugar, then cooked in butter until golden. Crisp on the outside and soft inside, it needs no batter or flour, and just 20 g of butter in the skillet instead of frying in oil.

With 6 slices, you can make a sweet breakfast for 3 in 25 minutes, served with plain yogurt and banana. Unlike sweet toast with jam that is coated in a flour batter and fried, this version is dipped in eggs and milk.

Instructions

Tip: tap a step to mark it as done.

  1. Beat the eggs

    3 min

In a shallow bowl or deep plate, beat the eggs with the milk, cinnamon, and vanilla sugar until evenly combined.

  2. Soak the bread

    3 min

Place the bread slices in the mixture and let them soak for 10–15 seconds on each side. They should be moist all the way through without falling apart. Soak fresh bread for less time.

  3. Cook in butter

    15 min

Melt about a third of the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add 2 slices and cook for 2–3 minutes on each side, until golden brown. Cook the remaining slices the same way, using the remaining butter.

  4. Serve

Serve the French toast warm with plain yogurt and sliced banana, sprinkled with a pinch of cinnamon. For younger children, cut it into strips they can hold in their hands.

Tip: Day-old bread or vianočka, a sweet Slovak braided bread, works best; fresh bread absorbs too much liquid and tears when flipped. If using vianočka, leave out the vanilla sugar, as the bread is sweet enough. Read more: Spotted bananas: how they differ from unripe ones
