Homemade salónky are chocolate-covered fondant candies wrapped in shiny foil and hung on the Christmas tree. There's no need to cook the fondant: simply work powdered sugar with a little cream, butter, and vanilla sugar into a smooth mixture. Let the pieces dry overnight, then dip them in dark chocolate. You can flavor some of the fondant with rum or shredded coconut. They keep for about 3 weeks in a cool place; hang them on the tree a few days before Christmas.

Instructions

Tip: tap a step to mark it as done.

  1. Make the fondant

    10 min

Mix the softened butter with the vanilla sugar. Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar and the cream, a tablespoon at a time, working the mixture into a smooth, nonsticky fondant with a texture similar to modeling clay.

  2. Roll out and cut

    10 min

Roll the fondant between two sheets of parchment paper to about 1.5 cm thick, then cut into rectangles about 2 × 3 cm.

  3. Let dry overnight

    12 hr

Arrange the pieces on parchment paper and leave uncovered at room temperature until the next day so the surfaces dry out and the pieces don't fall apart when dipped in chocolate.

  4. Dip in chocolate

    30 min

Melt the chocolate with the oil in a double boiler. Using a fork, dip the pieces one at a time, let the excess chocolate drip off, and place on parchment paper.

  5. Let set

    1 hr

Let the chocolate set completely in a cool place, but not in the refrigerator, which would leave white patches on the chocolate.

  6. Wrap the candies

    30 min

Wrap each piece in aluminum foil, then in thin tissue paper. Use scissors to cut the ends of the paper into fringe. Hang the candies on the tree with thread.

Tip: The fondant should be firm. If it sticks to your hands, add a tablespoon of powdered sugar; if it crumbles, add a few drops of cream.
