This homemade sweet cherry liqueur calls for just three ingredients: cherries, granulated sugar, and vodka. Cover pitted cherries with sugar and vodka in a jar, then let them steep in a warm place for a week, shaking the jar daily. Strain the juice through cheesecloth and heat it with the remaining sugar and vodka. The next day, bring it to a boil once more and bottle it. You can also add a little cinnamon while the cherries steep for a fragrant liqueur that makes a lovely gift.

Instructions

Tip: tap a step to mark it as done.

  1. Place the cherries, preferably pitted, in a 3-liter jar. Cover with 1 kg of sugar and pour in 0.5 l of vodka. Cover the jar with a cotton cloth or stretch gauze and let steep in a warm place for 7 days. Shake the contents daily.

  2. After a week, strain the infused juice through a cheesecloth-lined strainer and a funnel into a larger clean jar to remove any small particles. Pour the juice into a pot, add the remaining 1 kg of sugar and 0.5 l of vodka, and heat until the sugar dissolves. Strain it again through a cheesecloth-lined strainer into a container.

  3. Return the container to a warm place. The next day, bring the liqueur to a boil one last time, then pour it into bottles with airtight closures.

Tip: For a more fragrant liqueur, add a little cinnamon to the cherries while they steep.

Tip: The cherries left after straining are soaked in alcohol and can be used in desserts or served with ice cream for adults. Store the bottles of liqueur in a cool, dark place.
