This savory sun-shaped bread makes an attractive snack, with two rounds of yeast dough filled with bacon, green onions, sour cream, grated cheese, and mustard. A glass is pressed into the center, and the dough is cut outward into 24 rays, which are then twisted. Brushed with egg and sprinkled with seeds, the bread bakes for about 20–25 minutes. Pull off the rays to serve.

Instructions

Tip: tap a step to mark it as done.

  1. Dough

Mix the flour and salt in a bowl. Crumble in the yeast, add the sour cream and milk, and knead into a dough. Let rest for 20 minutes, then add the olive oil and knead for another 5 minutes. Cover with a kitchen towel and let rise for about half an hour.

  2. Filling

Mix the sour cream with the finely chopped bacon, green onions, cheese, mustard, salt, pepper, and nutmeg.

  3. Shape the sun

Divide the dough into two pieces and roll each into a 25 cm circle. Place one circle on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spread with the filling, and cover with the second circle. Press the edges firmly together. Press a glass into the center, then use a sharp knife to cut outward from the glass toward the edges to make 24 rays, each 5–6 cm long. Twist each ray twice.

  4. Bake

Remove the glass, brush the bread with the beaten egg, and sprinkle with seeds. Bake in an oven preheated to 180–200 °C (350–400 °F) for about 20–25 minutes, until golden brown.

Tip: Twist all the rays in the same direction for a more even shape. Leave a border around the filling so it does not leak out when you twist the dough.
