These buttery caramels are made in one pot with milk, cane sugar, butter, and a can of sweetened condensed milk. Once the mixture comes to a boil, let it bubble for 10–15 minutes. Check the consistency with a simple test: a drop of the mixture should form a ball in a glass of cold water. Then stir the caramel off the heat until it thickens, pour it into a pan lined with parchment paper, and cut it into squares once cool. These also make a homemade gift.

Instructions

Tip: tap a step to mark it as done.

  1. Place all the ingredients in a saucepan and heat gently, stirring constantly, until the butter melts and the sugar dissolves.

Once the mixture comes to a boil, let it bubble for another 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally to keep it from sticking to the bottom.

  2. After 15 minutes, scoop up a little of the mixture with a spoon and drop it into a glass of cold water. If it forms a ball, the mixture is ready.

  3. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir until the mixture thickens and becomes stretchy. Pour it into a pan lined with parchment paper and let it cool. Then cut it into squares.

Tip: Score squares in the lukewarm caramel with a knife to make it easier to cut once cool. Wrap the pieces individually in parchment paper so they don't stick together.
