Donuts are classic American ring-shaped pastries topped with a sweet glaze instead of a filling. The dough, made with flour, sugar, eggs, milk, and butter, is leavened with baking powder, so it needs no rising time—just an hour in the refrigerator. It is then shaped into rings with holes in the center and fried in hot oil until golden brown. Once cooled, the donuts are decorated with a sweet glaze of your choice.

Instructions

Tip: tap a step to mark it as done.

  1. Combine the dry ingredients in a bowl, then add the remaining ingredients. Mix and knead the dough using a stand mixer.
  2. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour. Shape the dough into rings, making a hole in the center of each.
  3. Heat the oil in a pot and fry the donuts until golden brown.
  4. Let the donuts cool on a plate lined with paper towels. Then sprinkle with sugar or drizzle with a glaze of your choice.

Tip: Cut out the rings with a large glass and the holes with a bottle cap so the donuts are the same size and can be fried together. Fry the cutout centers too to make little donut holes.
