Activate the yeast
Crumble the yeast into 100 ml of lukewarm milk, add the sugar, and let stand until foamy.
Make the dough
Mix the flour with the salt, then add the remaining lukewarm milk, the oil, and the yeast mixture. Knead by hand or in a bread machine until smooth. Let rise in a warm place for about 40 minutes.
Weave the bread
Roll out the dough into a rectangle about 20 × 35 cm, sized to fit the baking sheet, and transfer it to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cut it into strips about 2 cm wide along the longer side, then weave the hot dogs through the strips, alternating over and under. Brush the surface with beaten egg.
Bake
Bake in an oven preheated to 180 °C (350 °F) for about 15 minutes, then sprinkle with grated cheese and continue baking at 160 °C (325 °F) for about 20 minutes more, until golden. Serve with mustard, tartar sauce, or ketchup.

Tip: Do not cut the strips all the way to the edges; leave about 2 cm of uncut dough on both sides to hold the bread together. Pat the hot dogs dry before weaving.
