A Monte Cristo is a ham and cheese sandwich dipped in egg before pan-frying. Spread the bread slices with mustard and mayonnaise, layer with ham and cheese, and press firmly together. Then dip the sandwiches in egg beaten with milk and salt, and fry them in butter in a regular skillet—no sandwich maker or other appliance needed. Breakfast is ready in about 15 minutes using ingredients you may already have at home.

Instructions
Tip: tap a step to mark it as done.
Spread mustard on 2 slices of bread and mayonnaise on the other 2 slices. Layer the ham and cheese on two of the slices, then top with the remaining slices.
Press the sandwiches firmly together so the layers hold together.
In a bowl, beat the egg and milk with a fork and season with salt to taste. Dip both sides of the pressed sandwiches in the mixture.
Melt the butter in a preheated skillet. Add the sandwiches and cook on both sides until golden brown.
Tip: Add the sandwiches to the skillet only once the butter stops foaming—if it is not hot enough, the egg coating will soak up the fat. Hold the sandwiches together from the top with a fork as you flip them to keep the layers from sliding.
